Own all the code you touch/use

In any company, in any project, you are not going to write all the code. You are going to use/reuse other’s work many times. When you do, you need to take full responsibility to the entire code and say that you just used it and if it does not work at all instances, it is not your problem.

“If I had the time to write the code all by myself then this would not happen. How can you ask me to be responsible for someone else’s mistake?” These are conversations that we hear often in the halls of a Software company. The reason for this is not realizing that the Customer really does not care, who wrote what portion of what. They just want their work done with your software and go home. If everyone felt that they have to write every line of code, then there is no company. There is no framework or product and everyone will keep reinventing everything, every time and never get to producing anything useful. Imagine if everyone in a society wants to build every product/ do every service by themselves; there will not be a modern society whose corner stone is division of labor and interdependency.

| Only if we own up to everything we see in someone else’s code that we are reusing, we can help the company on a big picture level to create better products and services. Only if we take full responsibility for all of our code, we can win the race to please the customer at all times; keep the customers with us and thus keep our jobs! | |
